Assessment & Supervision

CBT-Hear assessments ensure every clinician can deliver safe, ethical, and effective care.
Each stage combines formative (developmental) and summative (formal) assessments, supported by structured supervision.

Assessment Principles

  • Formative – Build skills through reflection, supervision, and feedback
  • Summative – Confirm competence and readiness for certification
  • Supervision – Required from stage 2 onwards.
  • Registration – Registration is essential to keep the CBT-Hear title

Stage 1 – CBT-Hear Certified

Total CPD: 18 hrs | Outcome: CBT-Hear Certified | Next Step: Stage 2

Stage 2 – CBT-Hear Certified Practitioner

Total CPD: 135 hrs | Outcome: CBT-Hear Certified Practitioner | Next Step: Stage 3

Formative tools

Summative assessments

  • Portfolio of 14 assignments: tinnitus case study, hyperacusis/misophonia case study, CBT theory case study, clinical assessment report, formulation, behavioural experiment, SEL review and counter-statements, diary and core beliefs, CBT integration, end-of-treatment summary, paediatric plan, service protocol, audit design, and CPD log.
  • Knowledge test: 20 multiple-choice questions (70% pass mark)
  • Final case presentation: 15 min

Certification requirements

  • 3 patients without psychiatric comorbidity, each seen for at least 6 × 90-minute sessions
  • 12 supervision sessions (90 mins each)
  • All assignments passed
  • Knowledge test passed
  • Final case presentation passed
  • Supervisor sign-off

Stage 3 – CBT-Hear Certified Advanced Clinician

Total CPD: 66 hrs | Outcome: CBT-Hear Certified Advanced Clinician |

Next Step: Supervisor or Fellowship

Summative assessments

  • Portfolio of 7 assignments focused on complex and comorbid cases: formulation, behavioural experiment, SEL review, diary and core beliefs, CBT integration, end-of-treatment summary, adherence and multidisciplinary collaboration case study
  • Final case presentation: 15 min

Certification requirements

  • 3 patients with psychological comorbidity, each seen for at least 6 × 90-minute sessions
  • 12 supervision sessions (18 hrs total)
  • All assignments passed
  • Final case presentation passed
  • Supervisor sign-off

Supervision Standards

  • Minimum of 90 minutes of supervision per month (group or individual)
  • During training: approximately 1 hour of supervision for every 3 hours of patient contact
  • Led by CBT-Hear Certified Supervisors or equivalent
  • Covers case review, skills observation, ethics, and reflective development
  • Can be delivered online or in-person, with records kept for certification

Keeping Your Certification

To keep the CBT-Hear title from stage 2 onwards, you must:

  • Maintain monthly supervision
  • Submit an annual CPD log
  • Provide evidence of ongoing clinical work
  • Follow the CBT-Hear Code of Ethics and Scope of Practice
